A new book “The Naked Neanderthal” says humans were the main cause thanks to their superior weapons. Compared to early humans, Neanderthals were muscular with a prominent brow and less pronounced chin. Since humans were the final species to occupy the cave, Slimak argues it's because they'd replaced those Neanderthals by wiping them out. Humans' superior weaponsScientists have found relatively few weapons belonging to Neanderthals , Slimak wrote. Yet genes can't tell us much about the nature of these interactions or how closely or amicably humans and Neanderthals lived.

Authorities in Novosibirsk fined a woman 15,000 rubles around the same time for tearing down a poster exalting Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine. In St. Petersburg, a man was briefly detained in September for holding a poster reading, “Wishing for peace is not a crime! In August, the police had briefly detained Belsky after he hoisted a poster in the same location reading, “Russia is tired of corruption, repression and propaganda! “In Russia, people are imprisoned for simply wanting peace,” said Belsky, a 34-year-old specialist in decorative restoration. “I don’t think it’s a crime to want peace.” The police warning has scared Belsky from staging any further protests.

Putin’s Forever War

Putin’s Forever WarVladimir Putin wants to lead Russians into a civilizational conflict with the West far larger than Ukraine. Far from the Potemkin paradise of Moscow, the war is ever visible. On the eastern shore of the lake, where white-winged gulls plunge into the steel-blue water, Yulia Rolikova, 35, runs an inn that doubles as a children’s summer camp. She is some 3,500 miles from the front, yet the war reverberates in her family and in her head. “I said, ‘No, you have an 8-year-old daughter, and it’s a much more important duty to be a father to her.’”

July 5 (Reuters) - Russia accused a small U.S.-based charity on Wednesday of "sabotaging" the construction of a huge gas pipeline to China and banned it as an "undesirable organisation". Jennifer Castner, director of the Altai Project, described the accusation as absurd but said it had been only a matter of time. The Russian prosecutor general's office said that while claiming to advocate nature conservation, the Altai Project was meddling in Russia's internal affairs and could damage its economic security. "The key direction of the organisation's work is sabotaging the construction of the Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline," it said. The planned pipeline is intended to deliver 50 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year from Russia to China via Mongolia.

Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary AnthropologyA deer tooth pendant has revealed details about the woman who wore it between 19,000 and 25,000 years ago. The groundbreaking analysis by a team of European researchers marks the first time scientists have successfully isolated ancient human DNA from a Stone Age artifact. Gregory BretonWith large ears and adorable faces, sand cats went viral seven years ago when their kittens were photographed in the wild for the first time. Although smaller than domestic cats, sand cats live in harsh environments with scorching heat, hunt venomous Saharan horned vipers and rely on blood from prey as a source of water. To unravel the many mysteries of sand cats, researchers tracked 22 of the felines that had been fitted with radio collars for four years.
Scientists have recovered the DNA of a woman from the tooth, which was used as a pendant 19,000 to 25,000 years ago. The pristine collection of the pendant from Denisova Cave paid dividends. The researchers who found the pendant, which was determined to be 19,000-25,000 years old, used gloves and face masks when excavating and handling it, avoiding contamination with modern DNA. The oldest-known objects used as personal adornments date to about 100,000 years ago from Africa, according to the University of Leiden's Marie Soressi, the study's senior archeologist. Denisova Cave long ago was inhabited at different times by the extinct human species called Denisovans, Neanderthals and our species.
CNN —Traces of ancient DNA contained in old bones have spilled fascinating secrets about the past. The research, published in the journal Nature on Wednesday, revealed intriguing details about its ancient wearer and is the first time scientists have successfully isolated ancient human DNA from a Stone Age artifact. Shown here is the ancient DNA extraction lab at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary AnthropologyTypically, researchers would use a small drill to extract bone powder from an artifact or bone. The pierced deer tooth discovered in Denisova Cave in southern Siberia yielded ancient human DNA.
Instead, his spokesman issued a statement insisting that Kherson remained Russian territory despite the Ukrainian flag hoisted above its central square. The conference was dominated by discussion of the war in Ukraine. Zelenskyy made an address to the summit, by special invitation as Ukraine is not a member, unlike Russia. Russia's next move after the loss of Kherson did soon become apparent — but not from anything Putin did in public. On Tuesday, a salvo of missiles fell on cities across Ukraine, the largest barrage in more than a month.
